There is a round flange at the top of the mixer box, but it is sealed
closed. Looks like a plug of sorts. There is no elbow there at all.

All this stuff is there and seems to be attached properly.

Mixer box is there with the hoses from the heater boxes attached, no hose or
elbow though.  How do I tell if there is a thermostat installed?

You said the elbows were left off some cars in '71. Did they do that for a
particular reason or were they just being mean?
