The first thing to do is replace ALL the gas lines. Next, pull the fuel gage
sending unit, and with a flashlight, look inside the tank and see how
clean/dirty it is. If it has rust, and sludge, get the tank cleaned. Check
the fill neck vent line on the back side of the fill neck, under the fender.
It is a hose about 3/4" in diameter. Most of these have rotted away by now,
and have been letting water thrown off the wheel into the gas tank.
The Automatic trans in our T-3's is a pretty tuff transmission. The same
basic design is still being used in the newer VW's. Audi's, and Porsches.
They do have one flaw, and that is that reverse is about the same gear ratio
as second gear, which means they don't have much pulling power in reverse.
My '71 FB Auto had almost 150k miles on it before it was touched, and that
was mainly to fix some oil leaks.
Yes, the case on an automatic engine is different than for a manual trans.
There is a place on the bottom of the case that is relieved to give access
to the torque converter bolts. That is the only difference.
