The correct firing order is 1432 for all air cooled VW engines. Seen
from above the distributor turns CW, so that's the direction to trace
the wires.
Of course you can go backwards (CCW) and then the reverse firing
order becomes 1234. This agrees with your statement above.
If your only manual is a Clymer's you're almost better off going by
the seat of your pants.
