I always used to change both inner and outer front bearings if the hub gets
noisy, as advised by manuals.  Since VW lists have said you only need to
change the one that seems bad, I've twice had to dismantle everything again
to do the other one straight after, having found the wheel still hums a bit.
For a few dollars more (where have I heard that phrase before? ;-) you may
as well change both inner and outer at the same time; it's only about 25%
more time, if that.
