[T3] Rear Wheel Bearing

I am in the midst of a rear wheel bearing replacement (I didn't want that
funny scraping noise to be a wheel bearing, but that's what it turned out to
be).  Car is a 1969 Fastback.

I took everythong out of the bearing carrier and cleaned things up.  I got a
replacement outer roller bearing and race because the old parts did not look
good (pitting and scoring..).

Now, I think I need help getting the new outer bearing in.  The inner
bearing, inner race, spacers, and hub are in place.  Now, I'm trying to get
the new outer bearing to seat all the way into the carrier.  I have tapped
it in with a drift and light hammer as far as it seems to want to go, but
the outside face of the bearing is not yet flush with the edge of the
carrier.  The bearing edge is about 1/8 inch from being flush.  Isn't it
supposed to be flush here??  Or maybe it is supposed to go in even farther??
I am thinking about tapping the wheel axle back out and tapping that bearing
with a bigger hammer and block of wood, but I don't want to risk screwing
something up.

The manuals are not clear on this point.  I would look at the other side to
check, but the car is already jacked up, and I didn't loosen the axle nut on
that side before getting into this.  I should have noted this better before
getting everything apart!  Thanks in advance for your help.
