So you can't see them at night at all? There IS a plastic filter to 
give a green tint to the light, but that is standard and should not 
be tamprered with. I suppost it might be covered with dirt. You can 
pull out the lamp and look down inside; maybe a Q-tip (be very 
gentle) will reveal something.

I think they were all grey up to the end of the 71 model year, but 72-
3 black face ones would fit right in a 71 dash. You can look at the 
back of the instruments and read the date of their manufacture.
