I'll have to admit that I never considered the possibility that the 
cap was a regulator as well as a shutoff. How sure of this are you? I 
thought I remembered that the fluid pressure would drop off as the 
tire pressure dropped, but now I'm not so sure. Have you actually 
measured it somehow?

I keep meaning to cut one of the special caps open to see how/what 
they work. Most of them have died by now, but I think the ones in my 
cars are still good. There are some in my salvage that I think are 
bad, but I need to check them before I take a chance on destroying a 
good one.
