When you did the compression test you drew gas thru the engine and it 
ended up in the muffler. When you started up the engine that gas 
ignited. If you have FI you can avoid this by pulling off the plastic 
plug from the pump relay while you do this test.

At worst this bang is just hard on the muffler.

The spring holds down the washer which is under it and keeps it from 
rattling around. You can reform the retaining fingers on the plastic 
plug in very hot water.
