I didn't realize that VW of Canada imported all the type 3s (at least
for some years with the gas heaters) but that doesn't change the fact
that all the type 3 heaters that I have heard about before this were
of a type that installed in the trunk, in front. Yours sounds better,
and the fact that you can point to 2 of them seems to indicate that
they must have come that way, Still, if that design existed, why
would VW have switched later to an inferior design. It's also
possible that there were various designs of the Eberspracher heater
available and some dealers just ordered what they thought was a
better design and installed it themselves.

Has anyone else seen type 3s with a gas heater installed over the
transmission?
