I read somewhere (I think it was a Bob Hoover article) that the stock air
cleaner can be cleaned by soaking it in kerosene.  (Trivia point: The fibers
in there are coir, the fiberous stuff from the husk of a coconut.  It's not
the same stuff as the horeshair in the seats).  I believe the article said
to soak the whole thing, taking care not to invert it.  Then, let it
drain/dry out thoroughly before reinstalling it.  I don't know how long it
should dry out, but if I were to try this, I'd probably let it sit for at
least a couple of days.

Under normal circumstances, though, I do not think you need to worry about
cleaning the inside of the air cleaner.
