[T3] Paint Codes

I have a 68 Square which had previously had some body work and was rather
poorly repainted on the exterior.  I've stripped this off and fixed things
up.  Since I'm getting close to painting ( priming this weekend ) I thought
I'd start looking into getting the original color or something close.  The
VW Dealer did not have paint codes earlier than the 70's.  The interior is
still original I believe and somewhere on the net, can't remember where, I
found out that the nearest color VW used in 68 is Lotus White.  At least I
think so.  Basically an off white. 

I inquired at the local auto paint store and they had PPG chips back to 70.
The fellow I talked with was rather adamant that the paint codes would be on
the car itself.  I tried to explain to him that even if they once were,
which I doubted on a 68 VW, they weren't anymore.  Were they ever on a 68
Square ?

I guess I can take part of the dash, like the glove box door, down to a
local body shop and get them to use one of those electronic color match
systems on it to find out what the paint mix should be.

Any paint wizards out there that can help me out ?
