[T3] Point Adj. with Dwell meter

Gents:
Today I attempted my first tune-up, to my 71, fuel injected Squareback. I 
wasn't able to finish it , due to my ignorance on using a dwell meter. Every 
time I connected it to the battery, the neddle went off the scale and didn't 
move from there, engine running or not (By the way my dwell meter has 2 
cables that connect to the battery and a third one that connects to the 
coil). What am I doing wrong? any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in 
advance
