[T3] ENGINE STILL ON THE TABLE
I still have not installed my engine . It's been on a table for weeks
now ready to be installed. Got my fresh stock EFI Brazilian heads
on (universal heads from local vw part store), I hope these don't crack
under my daily police chase speeds. I found out why my old heads
cracked under heat. I loaned my brother this car and he did not know
how to turn off the heater (non vw car guy) so he remembered when
I rebuilt the motor were the heaters were so he disconnected them
at their inlet and reconnected them when returning the car, I was on
travel. GOOD GREIF !!! Well this more than likely caused this one
heart ache ( not related to my flexplate heart ache). I found this out
when he asked me recently how to turn off the heater. Well he
could of asked a vw guy this question in my absence. Well at that
time the outside temperature was around 90 degrees so the the heads
roasted to death, (be jealous ,some of you guys, it's 65 degrees here
and this is a little uncomfortable for some people , gotta wear
a sweater and no shorts or sandals, damn this weather ! ).
I have RTV'd every seam, every contact, every item on the cooling
tin, every washer, every screw, every nut to the point that the
tin is one piece and that is one piece with the case and cylinders.
I even RTV'd the case to all tin contact (no tins cutting in).
Guaranteed not to rattle or loosen hardware or tinny noise, or
air leaks. Used RTV as loktite for alot of hardware, found this
more effective than loktite because it will not get brittle under heat
and break off in powdery form or crack under vibration. You can
see if the hardware turns if applied on the outside of hardware. I
used both loctite and RTV on my tins last time and RTV was still holding
and flexible while the locktite could not take vibration or great metal
expansion caused by high heat. I used red RTV. I put RTV under
the head washers under the valve covers to prevent oil from dripping
the last time. My engine was bone dry before my tranny fluid leaked
from the cracked torque converter.
I replaced all of my transaxil fluid with GL-5 85W - 140W . Oh man!
Oh man! the fluid I removed was black, non see through metal
particled thin stuff. The magnetic drain plug looked like a furry
furbie. Thank god for magnets. I hope my differential has many
years to go after this. I am filling my autotranny with synthetic
fluid this time. I hope I have no more weird leaks, this autotranny
fluid is expensive.
I bought one of those "superwamidyne" 72 plate oil coolers with 9 inch
electric fan with thermostat to replace my homemade military cooler
with 10 computer fans. This will probably fit nicer and last longer, not
to mention probably cool better. I fell into some overtime money.
I have a question for you guys.
How do you feel about those ratio rockers?
Do they put extra power? On the lower end ? Can you feel them? Do you
put them on the intakes only or exhaust too? I have EFI, counterweighted
crank, stock cam and stock displacement. Will I feel the difference at the
pedal? I am thinking of buying 1.25 ratio rockers
