If the drive gear is reversed then the engine will still run just fine, but ONLY if you wire the spark plug wires to the dist cap 180 deg from the proper place. This will make for a cluttered engine, but there is no other problem. If your engine runs at all with the wires in the right place, then your drive gear is in correctly.
