Re: Fresh Air Hoses

Which set of hoses are we talking about here, the small ones coming
off the elbows at the fan housing or the ones running to the heater
boxes? If it's the heater box ones, I hope you plugged the fan
housing holes. I lost a head due to lack of cooling that way when I
first got my Square, the PO had stuck in a header setup and it had
cheesy canvas and wire "hoses" going to the heater boxes which weren't
secured by anything and flapped in the breeze. I figure a lot of the
cooling air out of the fan housing didn't get to go where it was
supposed to go that way. Anyway, chalk up 1 cracked head in 10 miles
of driving on the interstate. I managed to gen up a set of
connections to some original elbows from the scrapyard, a VW parts guy
got some heater tubes in that were steel and the right size and shape.
I just had to figure out how to fasten them in there. I managed to do
so and I've got heat. The smaller tubes off the elbows duct cool air
up to the body-mounted thermostats at the rear of the passenger
compartment, this lowers the temp of the air so you don't get melted
heels or upholstery. Also important.

I imagine that with no air flowing through the heat exchangers, head
temps would go up some from radiation off the exchangers, how much I
couldn't guess, also the exchanger interrnals themselves might be
subject to heat damage. If you look at the flapper valve section on
the heater box, you'll notice a little louver there, that lets air
pass even when the flap doesn't let air into the cabin, probably to
keep the temp down inside the exchanger.
