[T3] original CA license plate saga

Friday was D-day for my original license plate reinstatement
attempt with the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

My '69 Square was bought new in California in late 1968, and was
here until 1997 when I took it to Michigan. I wanted very much to get the
black & gold CA plates reinstated on the car now that I'm here in
California.

I made an appointment at the DMV a week ahead of time -- 9:40am on
Friday. I used POR-15 Wax Prep (amazing stuff!) to make the plates look
extra-shiny, and gathered up 1969 and 1997 registration slips, which I got
with the car when I bought it from the first owner. The plates themselves
had JAN 1998 stickers on them.

I think I got the serious luck of the draw at the El Cerrito DMV in
a Registrar Extraordinaire. When I asked if I could pretty-please have my
shiny old plates put back on the car, she went about cracking every book,
asking her supervisor, trying every computer screen, and even calling
Sacramento to find a way to do it. Wow! She spent like over an hour doing
this. She tried first doing a "YOM" (Year Of Manufacture) registration for
the plates, but that's only good for cars older than '63 or '62. She then
followed up on some sort of "collector" status, and ended up with some sort
of "reinstatement of plates" form.

I ended up with a temp reg through the end of December, and am to
expect the reg stickers in the mail from Sacto in the next four weeks or
so. Yay! Can't wait 'til they come.
