[T3] type4 motor into type3, my journey - ( LOOOONG !! ) butinformative.. I hope...

Well all,

I've received several emails privately off list asking me about my Type4
motor conversion into my 'Notch. Letters go from -"hey dude.. you car is kewl
- tell me everything you did to get this engine into your car !! I want to go
kick some butts out on the boulevard" to "I am very interested and would like
whatever feedback you've got"

So, for everyone involved... here we go.......

( some of this letter is quoted verbatim to a letter I sent to
flat4robb@aol.com... the names have been changed to protect the innocent..;)

<< motor and trans real cheap is this a viable option for a 70' square ? >>

is this a viable option ?........hmmmmm....... I get this question posed to
me quite often. I guess a lot of it depends on your resources. Yes, the motor
( physically - the block ) will bolt right up. Is the motor out of a 914 or a
bus ? did you get any tin ? There will need to be some small modifications to
the tin either way. You're going to learn all about the wiring schematic on
your square ( as the t4's use an alternator ) I spent the majority of last
weekend pulling new wires and kind of building a new wiring loom from the alt
to the regulator. Ummm... let's see..... ah, intake manifolds... I had a set
built for me by a company in California so that the carbs would still fit
under the decklid - not cheap - and - it was only the second set of these
manifolds that they had made - the other set was for a HotVW's article back
in '89 - your only other option is to use type4 manifolds and leave the
decklid off as they stick up too far ( or maybe try to retrofit the FI - if
your square is FI then this is a VERY viable alternative ! ). Exhaust.....
nothing.. and I mean NOTHING is made to fit ! nobody sells type4 ( 411/412 )
performance exhaust's and the bus exhausts fit but you have to shorten the
Jpipes - or heater boxes if you really -REALLY want heat - but then you'll
have to find a way to make them work - my notch is a "summer only" car so I
didn't worry about heater boxes - and yes - I used a bus exhaust. Flywheel
and clutch are stock bus parts - 215mm - but you have to have the flywheel
modified ( have a bearing pressed into the center of the flywheel - to
support the input shaft from the gearbox ), throwout bearing is different but
fits.
You'll need to fabricate engine hanger brackets.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not trying to talk you out of this !! it's just not
a weekend - bolt-in sort of thing - nor - not for the faint of heart. No
cutting of stock sheet metal is required.
If you need any assistance feel free to get ahold of me - I'll be glad to
help - just realize what you're getting into. I took this entire winter to do
my project - it also helps to have an extra case w/ P's & C's and heads on it
( empty - no crank etc. ) to bolt in the car to do "fittings" with. That's
where I am right now - I have about 8 or 9 type4 motors sitting around in
storage and I just pulled an empty case - slapped some empty cylinders on it
w/ some junk heads and bolted it in to fit the exhaust and engine hanger
brackets. I just took my case that I'm going to build for the car - to the
polisher yesterday - I'm going to have him polish the top of the case - only
the part you can see with the decklid up.

<< just came into a 2.0 914 motor and trans real cheap >>

the gearbox is good for nothing to us - you may be able to sell it to a bus
guy or a dunebuggy guy - but it's of no use to a type3. A better option is to
go through and strengthen your stock gearbox as the ratios are very favorable
for this kind of swap. I put in heavy duty 1st & 2nd ( all stock gearing )
welded 3rd & 4th and put in extra spider gears and a beef-a-diff.
Also the cases are durn near indestructible - I usually degrease them and
then have the outside of the case blasted with steel shot.
I'm just waiting for the case to came back from the polisher and I still need
to finish welding my Jpipes - they need to be shortened an inch to get the
bus exhaust to tuck in behind the apron.

I think that this pretty much outlines what's involved. If anyone has any
further questions - either post to the list or email me.

Dan
