Hi all, I found a fabulous piece of Type 3 technical information at the VW Swapmeet at Slough, near London (UK) today. It's an 83 page full analysis by our UK Motor Vehicle Research Association of a 1969 Auto FI Fastback. They got a brand new car, and tested it over 10,000 miles, took it apart and weighed and photographed the bits, measured the metal thicknesses, cam follower hardness and crystalline structure, and even counted the micro-cracks per inch in the chroming system etc. There are graphs of power output through the gears, fuel consumption at steady speeds, acceleration graphs, noise levels due to road and engine against frequency, endurance tests, engine and gearbox temperatures at different speeds, etc etc. Full list of sections follow.... Specification; Dimensions and Weights; Power Outputs and Requirements; Fuel Consumption; Acceleration; Maximum Speed; Noise; Pave Endurance Test (engine rear support bar broke, and all dampers needed replacement); Maintenance; General Impressions; Structure Specification; Equipment; Construction; Exterior; Interior; Dimensions; Aerodynamic Coefficients; Torsional and Bending Stiffness; Sealing; Heating and Ventilation; Visibility; Engine Specification; Construction; Engine Dynamometer Test; Fuel Quality Requirements; Exhaust Emissions; Cold Starting; Temperature Survey; Transmission Specification; Description; Chassis Specification; Suspension Evaluation; Steering Evaluation; Brake Tests; Electrical Specification; Electrical Equipment Tests; Examination of Mechanical Parts; Examination of Decorative Trim; Material Thicknesses; Interior Features; Exterior Features; Fire Risk. There are some priceless sections, that had me laughing out loud. For example:- "Long wave pitching: The car followed the surface contours until 30 mph, when a slight build-up of vertical movement was noticed on the last two crests in each direction. At 35 mph, the front suspension was using all its movement on bump. At 40 mph, all passengers were thrown off their seats at every crest, while the 45 mph run caused loud noises at full rebound and all occupants hit their seats and the car roof alternately, after which testing was terminated." In due course, I shall put interesting and relevant bits on the website, but meanwhile if there are specific bits of research that are wanted, I'll try to supply what I can. I shall now have to try to get a similar document for another same class vehicle to allow me to see what is good and what is poor performance. They do give a general summary, but I don't think Henry Ford would have invested in this model either! Dave.
