I really am not Tamara but GENE. She's a Peugeot junkie -- I'm the T3 junkie, and in this case, I MEAN JUNKie! I haven't had the joy of a T3 seat under my tail for altogether too long. I have to start rebuilding or northeast rust will take all six of my squarebacks. Anyhow, as I read your tale of woe, I was amazed at how the sounds came back to me. It was 1971, my first (bought new) T3 had a bit over 100k on it, I was in the wilds of Vermont, and the flickering light became obvious because it was very late at night and I had very far to go. I made it. But as the days passed, I noticed more sloppiness in the engine evidenced by the same symptoms you note. I also had what I perceived to be more throaty sorts of noises. over a week or two, it got no better. I was driving 6-800 miles each week, so I took the extreme and immediate route of ordering a factory remanufactured short block, pulled and replaced the noisy engine. I was quick enough to avoid "the big one," which I learned later could have been a push rod through a cylinder wall, a bullet (cam follower) through the case, or a piston rod through anything sitting in the cargo area. A bit dramatic sounding, but you aren't reporting happy sounds and sights. Others may counsel more moderately, but I would rebuild it now, forgetting about making it through winter. It is rebuildable in a blizzard beside the road, but it isn't fun. Easy does it, Gene ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
