The cables normally last for decades, so you must have some kind of problem. Exactly WHERE are they breaking? Do you lubricate them when you put them in? The cable should run inside a cable housing where it runs above the transmission. This housing is sometimes lost during an engine rebuild and can lead to chafing and wear of the cable where it exits the body or enters the engine. I have some good used housings if you need one.
