RE: [T3] exhaust fumes

You are on a Type 3 mailing list but you don't know what one is...did you
read through the web site at all?

First, the basics (there are other Types but these are what you need to know
for now)...
Type 1 = Bug & Karmann Ghia.
Type 181 = What you have, a Thing. It's based upon the Type 1 pan/engine.
Type 2 = Bus with a Type 1 motor (the traditional Bus most think of).
Type 3 = Squareback, Fastback & Notchback. The subjects of this list.
Type 34 = A very cool, rare, hawk-looking Karmann Ghia on a Type 3
pan/engine.
Type 4 = The next step up from the Type 3. Engine used in later Buses and
the Porsche 914 as well.

Okay, fumes in the heating air: Leaks in the exhaust system as well as
leaks in the heat exchangers can pull in fumes. Make sure you have every
thing well sealed (tubes securely clamped with hose clamps, for example). A
common place for the exhaust to rust/rot away is at the junction where the
muffler (or after-market header) connects to the lower heat exchanger.
Exhaust can leak out from here and get sucked into the heating system.
