Hmmm, you just tended to the batter cables? I had one that was rotting away, and it gave the same symptoms. The way mine failed, any movement or disturbance would cause more strands to break. I suspect that the starter is working fine, but that it isn't getting the electricity it needs. As with others, I, too, would look first to the batter and its cables.
