You should run it through the gears to fill all the passages then put
it in park and check the level with the tranny warm, engine on. I
suspect that you will still get the same results, however.

Not sure what this means, but here are some things to check: vacuum
modulator vacuum connection and adjustment. Shift cable adjustment.
Drop pan, clean screen, and replace ATF. Inspect for metal bits,
lining bits, discolored ATF while you're in there. Be very careful
not to overtighten the pan bolts when you put it back on. The pan is
easily distorted and will then be hard to seal.

Yes, you have a problem and you are correct in wanting to fix it
quickly before something is destroyed.

I'm wondering if this just all means that the main ATF pump at the
front of the AT is dying. I really don't have any AT experience to
judge this against; I've never gotten farther into one than removing
and disassembling the valve body.

There are band adjustments in the Bentley, but they may just be in
the Lubrication and Maintenance chapter. Check that and the AT
chapter, I don't remember. Adjustments for the VM and cable are in
the AT chapter. Make sure they are both correct.
