Re: Rims and offset

According to my Bentley, the stock wheel for '68-'73 (and maybe for
earlier years too, I'd have to check another book) is 4 1/2 J x 15,
which is nearly universal for types 1-3 of this era. The offset is
46mm, however, which varies from what most of the late Beatles got.

According to my '70-'79 type 1 Bentley:

"Karmann Ghias have 4 1/2 J x 15 wheels. As of March 1972, this rim
size has also been used on the other models covered by this Manual.
... Karmann Ghia wheels have a 46-mm (1.811-in.) offset, 1974 Super
Beetle wheels have a 41-mm (1.614-in.) offset, and the wheels for other
late models have a 34-mm (1.388-in.) offset. The 4 J x 15 wheels used
on cars other than the Karmann Ghia prior to March 1972 have a 40-mm
(1.575-in.) offset. The 1973 Sports Bug has 5 1/2 J x 15 wheels with a
26mm (1.024-in.) offset. The 1974 model has the same rim size with a
34-mm (1.339-in.) offset. Wheels for the 1974 Super Beetles and Sports
Bugs cannot be installed on earlier cars that have strut front
suspension. The use of wheels other than those standard for a given
year and model is discouraged. ... An incorrect offset dimension
may impose excessive stress on the wheel bearings."
