CaseyK=> How much time and money have you spent on your t3? what have
=> you done to it? :)
Three years, and I have so far avoided adding up the cost, I really don't
want to know. I did a strip to bare metal, lots of body work, I overhauled
all mechanicals except the transaxle, installed a completely new
interior -- very little on my car has *not* been done, and I'm not
finished yet.
=> Judging form the list of things that seem to need to be done on it,
=> it seems like the price of 2900 that he is asking is a little high.
Relatively speaking, the mechanical work is the easy part. In making a
purchase decision, it's best to focus on the body. Is it straight (no
collisions, no rust, no modifications) and complete in terms of trim,
etc.? Will it need to be painted soon? Is the interior viable? These
questions will determine your actual hassle and expense factors in
getting the car to where you want it. That said, I don't think I'd pay
half that for a car with as much apparent neglect as you describe unless
the body is really primo.
=> How hard are transmissions to fix?
The usual procedure is to find a good one (used or rebuilt) and install
it. Depending on the quality of the work, this can cost anywhere from
ten or twenty bucks for a used junkyard tranny installed yourself up to
$800 or 900 for a professional rebuild and installation. Unless your dad
has a lot of VW experience, however, I'd reserve judgment on the tranny
until I had a look at the shift linkage train, where you're far more
likely to have a problem.
