The difference in the final drive is not big enough to cut off 20 mph. I just yesterday calculated the top speed of my Beetle, concerning which box would give the highest top speed. The difference between the 1300 box (4,375:1) and the 1500/1600 box (4,125:1), which the 3 also uses came down to 10 km/h (6,2 mph) @ 4500 rpm in 4th. Btw, the calculated top speed @4500 rpm, with 165/15 tires is 92 mph or 149 km/h for our Type 3s, with the 4,125:1 final drives.
