Keith is correct. The rigid filler neck on the earlier cars was more prone to failure in a front crash than the soft mount filler neck thru the fender on the later cars. This is part of the reason I am considering a modern fuel cell instead of modifying an early tank for the FI fuel return line. The fuel cells are impact resistant plastic and do not have a filler neck. The fuel fill is thru a cap right on the top of the tank.
