I can't speak from experience as far as rebuilding a VW harness although I may have to in the near future for my 71 square. But, I have built a harness for a 4.3L Chevy that I purchased from a junkyard that slashed the wires when they removed the mill from the donor car. Primary wire & a clear Chilton's diagram were enough to construct the nerve system & the motor ran! As far as connectors go, I spent a lot of time in junkyards. The best I got from the GM parts counter was a blank stare with kind of a "WhatKindOfFreakAreYou? Just buy the stupid $500 harness" look. But I ended up with only about $50 in it. Be careful to use the right wire gauge. Some of those sensors are a bit finicky about voltage changes, particularly a throttle position sensor. If there's any question go one step bigger. Buying primary wire in bulk & wiring according to the diagram one circuit at a time gives you an engine compartment that looks like monochromatic linguini. LABEL LABEL LABEL!!! Use temporary connections so you can dissasemble the linguini, adjust the individual pasta lengths & reassemble into an orderly harness. Black tape at intervals & use those nifty plastic harness covers & it looks great. I don't recommend the shrink wrap you _¿|]auto parts stores. It doesn't hold to the wires well, slips around; any sharp edges of the physical wire connection will poke out; you run plenty big risk of burning the wire insulation during the shrink process. And for goodness sakes, don't solder. -----Original Message----- From: Todd, GaryX H <garyx.h.todd@intel.com> To: 'type3@vwtype3.org' <type3@vwtype3.org> Date: Tuesday, March 30, 1999 1:59 PM Subject: [T3] FI plugs >Here is my train of thought... watch out I might hit something.. ;-) > >My FI harness been aged to a crisp, broken wires, brittle connectors, etc. > >My first thought was to simply find a used replacement, but after thinking >some more I realized that I would end up with a similar 20+ year old >harness. > >My new idea: Build my own harness.
