Don't worry Paul; plenty of folk around the world now run their aircooled VWs on unleaded without problems. They have hardened valve seats anyway, and the octane rating for Premium is fine. Micro-welding that occurs at high engine speeds and damages valve seats is not a problem for us, assuming we are not working the engines hard for long periods at a time. Practical Classics have reported on lead substitute tests, and some work on even the worst (for valve seat recession) British engines; Zero lead 2000 and Red Line Lead Substitute are two that work. Don't bother with the metal pellets; the producers didn't allow their products to be tested! Just keep the valve clearances checked (0.006" is fine), and enjoy driving it. Don't forget, all cars need valve jobs eventually. Use that opportunity to upgrade the valves and guides (better still, use new complete heads). Dave.
