A few weeks ago, I accidentally backed into a large pile of frozen (as in
rock hard) ¢f³e his slightly bent my rear valence and tore off one of my
mud flaps. Straightening the metal was no problem, but the mud flap is/was
history.
I emailed T3D and asked about either used or new mud flaps. The reply was
that NOS flaps in either Chevron White or some shade of black would cost a
mere £85 ($140 US). No thank you ...
Last summer, I removed a host of parts from a wrecked 412 Variant. At
least whatever was salvagable. Door handle scratch guards, side marker
asemblies & lenses, mud flaps, bumper impact rubber, door handles, rear
fender gravel guards, rear cargo space carpet and some other odd parts.
I tried the door handle scratch guards on both early and late model Typ 3s,
but they don't fit. Strangely enough, they are a perfect fit for a Typ 1
from 1968 --->. The bumper rubber can also be made to fit a late model Typ
3, door handles are the same for any Typ 3 built after 8/69, the cargo area
carpet fits nicely and the gravel guards (which are mounted on the front
side of Typ 4 rear fenders) can be fitted nicely to the back side of a Typ
3's front fenders - sorry if that sounds confusing. Usually, Typ 4 gravel
guards need only a good polishing job and they are a cool addition to the
Typ 3 - if you like accessories like that. This seems to be something seen
often on early model Typ 3s from the UK, thanks to T3D (£30 for a pair).
What did not match up was the mud flaps. At least on a post 8/69 Typ 3.
The lower edge of the rear fender is not the same, although Typ 4 mud flaps
do have a similar shape; there is one flap for each side (left and right)
and the top part of the flap has a lip that can be screwed into the edge of
the fender.
Yesterday, I tried the fit these on my 1967 Square. The fender shape is
close enough that I thought I would give it a try. I removed the mounting
pieces from both the original Typ 3 flaps and from the Typ 4 flaps. I
swapped the Typ 3 mounting hardware to the Typ 4 mud flaps and then made
some slight modification to the position of the hangers. After abo’ˆè9 nutes, I had sucessfully mounted the Typ 4 mud flaps and to be honest,
you cannot tell the difference. Thankfully, the Typ 4 flaps were in great
shape and the white VW logo is firmly in place.
I will now have to go through this other Typ 4 Variant wreck and see if
there is anything else that works - the 2.0 LE engine that it has would be
fun to install!
Regards from the frozen edge of northeastern Europe,
