There was some discussion about this some months back, try looking in the site archives. The sender isn't very much, just a float shorting out a pair of resistance wires. I had to fix mine, thä{o>is put together with rivets and one of them wasn't conducting properly. A little work with an ohmmeter showed where the problem was. I used a fairly large soldering gun to put a drop of solder on that joint(after cleaning around it). It's been working the last 10 years now. To get it apart, there's a small, stamped sheetmetal nut on the bottom end. Remove that and the shielding can slides right off. Assuming your wires are intact, you might be able to do the same as me and save some bucks. Be careful, those wires are stretched and look pretty fragile. Oh, and make sure you've got a good ground to the body from the tank, too.
