It is said to be possible to spring the taper joint apart with a hammer blow from both sides at the same time, and I have done it once. However, a ball-joint splitter is a more civilised way of doing it. Don't worry about any damage you've done, you will be changing the joint. It's the same as a Beetle one; just get the correct thread (some are left-hand and some right-hand). A right-hand end on RHD (looking forward) is left-hand thread I think, IIRC. Dave.
