I remember that well; Esso Golden Extra was all our 1500S liked.
Incidentally, the advance curve on those engines begins below normal idle
rpm.  VW advice is to remove one or two plug leads to reduce the idle rpm
so you can set the timing correctly, when using a strobe lamp.
