Brush replacement is not hard and the parts are readily available. $40 for an overhaul isn't too bad, but it depends on what the shop thinks an overhaul consists of. To me, the commutator at least ought to be turned and undercut, bearings checked and replaced and windings inspected for shorts, as well as the works being thoroughly blown out. SanŮRci commutator takes care of pits and grooves, but if the thing is worn eccentric or tapered, it isn't going to help much. Since I've got access to a lathe and armature chucks, I've done this every time I replace brushes. Takes about 20 minutes. I've had commutators as much as .005-10" out of round before turning. Your symtoms definitely indicate worn brushes, at least. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Too much? Digest! mailto:type3-d-request@vwtype3.org Subjbscribe
