Hmmm, I don't know of any books that are the definitive "how to hot rod", particularly for VWs. There are some for the T1 but they really don't help the T3 scene. Remember, hot rodding costs money and usually quite a bit. Your chances of damaging something increaseč˘<l. Customizing, to me, is more of a happy-fuzzy-feely thing that varies from person to person. I've taken my styling cues from the American hot rod scene: big engine, custom drivetrain, custom shifter, fat tires, solid racing rims, lowered stance. Then I added more to suit my needs: stiff suspension, sound system, ragtop, computerized ignition, electronic points, alternator, additional gauges, working towards an electric fuel pump (my goal is to clean up the engine bay), etc. The VW style Cal-Look doesn't appeal to me and neither does Hawaiian Style. Look at other people's rides, no matter what they drive. Go to car shows, especially the hot rod shows, for ideas. Let your mind wander, define what you want and if it's economically and functionally feasible then do it with detail. Research your changes...you don't want the ragtop to leak water, the engine to run hot, the tranny to be geared so low that it's only good on the dragstrip, poorly maintained brakes and lap seatbelts on a fast engine, etc. The more you know the less likely you'll get burned, believe me. In the end, the car will reflect you and you're the one who has to live with the changes so do what pleases you. Don't try to get input from the list about what you should do because 1) it's your car, not ours and; 2) the purists/stockers are gonna tell you not to do it. If you see something you like then contact the owner about it.
