Scott Keck, don't underestimate yourself. You explained the coating perfectly. You see, I did have the outside of the heater boxes coated (when I said I disassembled the insulation, I meant the soft, non-metal stuff) So, therefore, the heat will be trapped inside the heat exchanger so it will have more heat to exchange with the fins on the inside. And, this coating is really good- doesn't even change color right where it bolts to the head. If your parts are new, by the way, they will carry a lifetime rust through warranty. If used, like mine were, they carry a 12 month warranty. But, I had mine done in '96 and Gertrude is a daily driver, drove from Arizona to Ohio in 2.5 days (2000miles), and unfortunately in the snow here too. 18,000 miles now and still no signs of chips, corrosion, or rust. Heat works great and you all know how hard it is to find a nice N.O.S. muffler these days! I was lucky enough to find one from an old VW mechanic, and am going to get it coated and keep it for my next type 3. Jet Hot has a few locations: AZ, MS, and PA. Their # is 1-800-432-3379 By the way, I actually paid $237.43 for my whole system. Can't even get a new muffler for that price! Email me if you have any particular questions.
