A lot depends on how and where it has been stored. Dry is good. Someone once told me that they had an old engine that was frozen up. They removed the spark plugs and then FILLED each cylinder with ATF and let it sit for a couple of days. This can't be completely true since at least one exhaust valve will be open. Then, with the spark plugs still out, they cranked the engine, blowing the ATF everywhere. Then started it up. I haven't tried this myself, but it sounds easier than a rebuild.
