Original engine could simply mean the original case.

In the late sixties, VW had some problems with quality control on engine
case aluminum. A lot of those engines now have case savers or replacement
cases. I haven't heard about a head recall, but perhaps the case saver job
is what he was referring to.

He's probably referring to the lower cylinder tins that clip to the lower
head studs. There are at least two types ... the flat ones found on all the
Type 1's ... and the curvey ones that wrap around the cylinders more and
have a square hole under each cylinder to let the air out (I'm told some of
the Type 3's had them but I've never seen a stock Type 3 with the curvey
ones on it). There is nothing wrong with the flat ones found on Type 1's and
all the Type 3's I've ever seen.

Try not to get too sentimental about having the original case and crank and
heads etc. These things wear out and eventually must be replaced or have
extensive machine work to keep them alive. Grab all your stuff, tow the car
home, buy a turnkey block, put your stuff on it and send more email
questions to the list if you have trouble along the way.
