[T3] gen light on sometimes

sometimes when i start up my square, the gen light stays on until i rev the
engine high.  i have replaced the voltage regulator and am going to get a
rebuilt gen today (i was going to get one anyway).  if the light does not go
out after that, what would i be looking for to be wrong?
