Was the melon bit cantaloupe or water? The smooth water-melon surface won't need much rubbing down (1200 wet and dry maybe), but a cantaloupe-melon surface would need some serious flatting. ;-) The guy who did my Fastback (2-pack metallic + clear) used about 1200 wet-and-dry with soapy water, then pulled a rubber squeegee over the surface to check any ripples were gone. Then he polished with rubbing compound - a very fine abrasive, followed by a special liquid polish. Watch the edges, or you may get back to the primer! For small areas of spray-can, I have used liquid copper/brass metal polish after the paint has had a day or so to dry. It does a great job. Dave.
