It takes a while to learn how tight is tight enough. Very true about tightness; I use a 4" long cranked socket wrench (? it's a ring spanner in UK-speak), so I've never been tempted to over-tighten them. I suspect an unflattened (=new) gasket is easier to seal in these circumstances, since it's designed to make up for the imperfect mating surfaces, so there's less risk of over-tightening. Dave.
