[T3] abandoned T3 sb

Thanks in advance for any advice. I recently found a 1973 T3 square back
abandoned on the side of the road
and after a little work, I now use it every day. Is 22mpg fuel usage
acceptable? I have rebuilt the carbs
to factory specs, re bushed the butterflys, and thoroughly tuned the engine
inc new plugs etc. Previously
it was sucking 17mpg. It currently has extractors with a new muffler which
is a bit noisy. The motor is stock.
If I replace the exhaust with a factory system, how will this affect
performance and fuel economy? This is my first VW so I hope my questions
don't sound stupid!
