I am very strongly considering one of the swamp coolers that Rocky Mountain
Motor Works is putting out. You can get normal wind assisted or fan
assisted for more $$. they fit on the window like the old Firestone models.
They are expensive, but hey, it's cool air in a VW!

Also about the year, it depends on your styling likes and dislikes.
Personally, i like the early chrome look with small signals and round
bumpers. That style went until about '69 (?). It also depends if you want
to deal with fuel injection which is in all t3s afte{î°You may notice
that i am biased because i have a '67, but i think it is the best year. I
was lucky. I got it when i had no idea what was up (i was 16 and it was my
first car). but, hey, it was only a $50 car! turns out i got a good year
for my likes. (i.e. first year with 12 volts and no fuel injection and
early look styling)
