This really is a VERY complicated question and the answer depends on many things. The most important is your compression ratio. The short answer is that you can use whatever gas eliminates knock in your engine. There is ABSOLUTELY no benefit to using higher octane gas than is necessary to eliminate knock. The catch is that it is possible to have knock that you can't hear (especially if you have a loud exhaust) that can still damage your engine. So this is something to be careful with.
