BrianH=> Should I adjust the valves again? Were the valves out of adjustment before? I'd guess probably not, at least not significantly. I'd be looking at carb balance. => Can I replace the oil bath air filter with a paper air filter? Sure, but you'll be pulling intake air from the engine compartment instead of outside. This will increase intake air temp during hot weather, and (since you lose the preheat hose too) decrease it during warmups in cold weather. This will have long-term impact on the longevity of your valves, and you may notice minor performance loss in the heat. Lots of people do it, even so. Why replace? The wet can works great! => What kinds of exhausts will allow me to still use the stock heater? The aftermarket exhausts I've seen all eliminate at least the rear heat exchangers, so you can count on 30% heat loss. Any exhaust that'll have noticeable effect on performance will eliminate the front exchangers as well, since those are the tightest bottleneck in the exhaust path. It's a difficult problem. I'm thinking of fabricating heater boxes around larger J-tubes, myself. Is anybody else interested in this idea? I may be able to get something going here .... => I'm thinking about lowering my '69 square. You'll find a lot of discussion and tips about this procedure in the Website archive, including very detailed instructions, as I recall. If you don't try to take it too far, it's not difficult.
