I think we are not in disagreement here.  The question is that of just
how strong these mounts are.  Maybe my reasoning is in error; but as I
figure it, if these mounts are already bearing a weight load, then there
is less load capacity remaining to bear the impact load when you hit a
good size bump.  It's possible that VW engineered these things to be
able to bear a load much greater than they expected; but, as a rule,
they didn't seem to want to spend extra money or add extra weight
without necessity.  And if you are talking about metal that is already
old and stressed ....  FWIW, I have heard of these things giving way on
busses, not to say that the comparison is one of equivalence.

Anyway, it just seems crazy to use shocks to adjust the ride height of
the car, when VW designed in an excellent feature for that adjustment --
namely, adjustable torsion bars.  And it's free.  As for high quality
shocks that give you more road feel, I'm all for 'em.  I don't want my
Square to drive like a Town Car.  :  )
