This also sounds pretty normal, but better. > So there we have it folks, I need new CV joints. Not so clear yet. At this point you only know that there is a difference between sides. Both sides could be fine. > BTW, what happens when a CV joint fails? Does the CV tube just go > flying around smashing into things? The "tube" is a solid round bar that has splines on each end to mate into the splined bores of the CV joints. The normal failure mode is a lot of noise, a torn boot, and a joint that no longer transmits torque. ie you get towed home. Usually no other damage. > And yes, when I took it for a test drive the noise was completely > gone. I wonder how long I have? The only other time I did this the owner drove it for a couple of years then left town with it. No further problems. YMMV. > And lastly, the CV Boots are in great shape, it seems the grease > leaked out through the hole where the CV tube comes in. On a 70 there is supposed to be a cuff on the boot where it fits over the shaft. They usually seal pretty well. You may have a tear somewhere that is not obvious. > And Jim, that clock you fixed for me hasn't needed any time adjustments > yet! Still right on the mark! Thanks! You're welcome. Glad to hear it.
