This could be normal.

This also sounds pretty normal, but better.

Not so clear yet. At this point you only know that there is a 
difference between sides. Both sides could be fine.

The "tube" is a solid round bar that has splines on each end to mate 
into the splined bores of the CV joints. The normal failure mode is a 
lot of noise, a torn boot, and a joint that no longer transmits 
torque. ie you get towed home. Usually no other damage.

The only other time I did this the owner drove it for a couple of 
years then left town with it. No further problems. YMMV.

On a 70 there is supposed to be a cuff on the boot where it fits over 
the shaft. They usually seal pretty well. You may have a tear 
somewhere that is not obvious.
