I just changed the axle boots on my 67 square...The rear has the 'dreaded' squats, or as I put it...the front just needs lowered! Anyway, I couldn't get the new boot on the right side axle until it dawned on me, I had the rear lifted from the wrong place. Instead of lifting at the jack mount, lift under the lower shock mount! This preloads the shock and allows the axle clearence needed for a swift boot change. And BTW, it doesn't take long for the oil from your tranny to disappear with a boot that is in 5 pieces. If you can't find it, look at the bottom of your engine and tranny horns. :-( I found that I have no more (engine) smoke now that the engine bottom is clean and the boot is replaced!
