"Out in the sun"?  I refute that - this is England in winter!
(Well, temp dithers between 30F and 55F - hardly winter as you know
it!).

I presume the M24 is the size of the threaded insert in early Type
3s.  That's why VW sold an adapter to make it a sensible size.
Beetles had something similar, with a big screw eye that went in
there with some seat belts I've seen.  Maybe the 20 tpi thread is a
good imitation of 1.25 mm, which is why we don't all have to replace
the mounting points when fitting new belts.
