My experiences in the UK is that the trannies are not a strong aspect of Type 3s. Maybe they fail more on start and stop and gear changing, but doing long highway trips means they do more miles per tranny. I've pulled quite a few things on the Squareback trailer hitch without problem, but the standard VW type relies on the bumper mounts being good, and you need holes drilled through the rear panel.
